I actually overhauled my spare wheel carrier, the steel cable i took out of it was totally twisted and mangled,

You have to drill out/grind off the rivets holding it together but overhauling it was dead easy and cost me about a fiver,

B&Q sell the steel cable and you need an electrical crimp to put on the carrier end to hold the cable on the winder and one of the tiny u-clamps (B&Q sell these aswell) for the steel cable to put on the other end after the that suspends the spare wheel.

re assembled and coated inside with plenty of grease

it has given me no aggro ever since and the spare has been on and off a few times.

took me about an hour to do in total.

or, as i did, crawl under the back, unwind the lot, cover everything with grease, put spare back in, total cost

[attachment=1335:attachment]TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.168/1996
Car and Light/Medium Commercial 27.03.1997

Model: Galaxy, built from 18.02.95 to 25.05.96
(build codes SC00255 to TC47697) inclusive

Markets: All

Subject: Difficulty in moving the spare wheel retainer

Labour Time: Remove and install the spare wheel and remove the plastic washers 0,2 hours

Service Instruction

This bulletin supersedes TSB 168/1996 dated 29.11.96. Please destroy the previous edition of this bulletin. Please note that only the tool supplied with the vehicle or a reversible ratchet and socket should be used to operate the spare wheel retainer.

If there is a concern that the spare wheel retainer is difficult to move then this may be resolved by removing the two plastic washers fitted at the spare wheel retainer pivot. To do this, remove the spare wheel, slightly push together the spring housing on the spare wheel retainer using molegrips, cut through the plastic washers and pull them out. Refit the spare wheel. See below for an illustration of the spare wheel retainer.

Spare wheel retainers without plastic washers have been fitted in production since 26.05.96 (build code TC).

I think the modified design has been around for some time. My handbook shows the retainer featured above, i.e the the metal "T" shape, but the one on the car is a nylon cone with a ring that slides down to engage with a flange round the bottom edge. It may have been fitted to the car under warranty I suppose, but it didn't look new when I stripped it down a couple of years ago.

Now when are they going to improve the design of the rest of it?

Hi Guys, am a bit of a newbie here but have had problems with the spare wheel not staying tight in position so I stripped the unit (actually quite easy as someone had already drilled out the rivets and replaced them with screws) unfortunately the plastic gear wheel inside is missing a tooth!

My question is does anyone know who manufactures this unit and if it is possible to get spares?

If not do any of you guys have a spare pulley or a winch that is no longer serviceable that I can remove the pulley from?
